Dog chewing grass on a backyard lawn

Why Does My Dog Eat Grass?

Grass eating is extremely common in dogs, and most dogs that do it are healthy.

Common reasons

  • They like it. Many dogs seem to simply enjoy the texture or taste of fresh grass.
  • Boredom. Dogs with extra energy may chew grass because it's there.
  • An upset stomach. Some dogs eat grass when their stomach feels off, though most grass-eating dogs don't vomit afterward.

When to be careful

Avoid lawns treated with chemicals, and watch out for toxic plants mixed in with grass. Call your vet if grass eating suddenly increases, or comes with vomiting, diarrhea, or a change in appetite.

What you can do

More sniffing walks and food puzzles give bored dogs something better to do with their mouth and nose.
