Why Does My Dog Kick When I Scratch Their Belly?
Share
Scratch your dog's belly or side in just the right spot, and their back leg starts kicking. This is called the scratch reflex.
Why it happens
Nerves under the skin send a signal that something is touching or tickling there, and the leg kicks automatically, the way it would to scratch away a bug. It happens without your dog deciding to do it, a bit like your knee jerking when a doctor taps it.
Does my dog like it?
Not always. Watch your dog's face and body. A relaxed dog that leans in for more is enjoying the attention. A dog that moves away, stiffens or licks its lips may want you to stop.
